Dear Edwards Rotarians, Reminder that we have our Tri-Club dinner on Thursday, 3/22/18 at Vista Arrowhead. This meeting will replace our regular morning meeting. Cost is $35 for Edwards Rotarians and $50 for any guests. The speaker is one you don't want to miss! Eric Alexander will inspire and excite us with tales of his adventures. On May 25th, 2001, Eric defied the odds and scaled Mt. Everest guiding his blind friend Erik Weihenmayer to its lofty 29,035' summit. In 2002, the pair traveled to Russia and climbed Mt. Elbrus at 18,500', and again found success on Mt. Kosciusko, Austrailia - two more of the seven summits (the highest points on each continent). Notably, the pair skied from the top of these latter two making them the first ever blind ski descents. To learn more about Eric, you can visit his website: highersummits.com. To RSVP, you can respond to this email, or sign up at the next meeting. I'm hopeful we will have a great turnout for the Tri-Club dinner. Please let me know if you have any questions. |

Dear Edwards Rotarians,
Our club Board has decided to implement a new idea. Once a quarter, we will pick a Thursday to skip our regular meeting. Rather than getting together as a group, we encourage each Rotarian to meet one on one with another member of the club, get together in a small group, or meet with a prospective member to recruit and promote our club.
We are trying out this new concept for a few reasons: First, I thought it would be a nice way for members of our club to get to know each other better on a personal level. Second, we can carve out some time to recruit new members and talk about Rotary. And lastly, the club will take the funds we normally spend on breakfast (call it $500) and transfer the funds to a new Foundation Reserve account. It is my goal to build up a reserve account so that we don't have to live year to year with our donation budget. It would be beneficial to have an account that we could use in the event that we had an unexpectedly poor fundraiser, or if we had an unbudgeted item we wanted to contribute to, such as a natural disaster relief. Ideally it would be nice to build this account up over several years to really put the club on firm financial ground.
Our first Rotary Fellowship and Outreach Day will be Thursday May 31st. I hope you will all take advantage of the time and use the day to do all things Rotary!
Please let me know if you have any comments or questions.
Yours in Rotary Service, Chris Rowberry

On The Road with a Foreign Service Officer Much has been written about U.S. Diplomacy, the operation of U.S. Embassies, the challenges and dangers faced by Foreign Service Officers and their families. However, there has been little attention given to the adventurous and fun side of the Foreign Service life. Despite all the work and hardship which the Foreign Service Officer (FSO) career entails, many people are still attracted to this life. Why? |
